This Civil War-era CDV (carte-de-visite) depicts a very young boy seated in a chair posing with his peg leg. A double-amputee, it’s not known for sure whether he may have served in the U.S. Army during the war, but is possible given that an estimated 250,000 – 420,000 young boys participated in battles during the Civil War for both the Union and Confederate armies.
The boy is identified on the reverse as “Nelson (or “Kelson”) Tom Sharman”. A very unusual image from this period, we sold this image at auction for $60.
