Circa 1880s large photo album filled with (47) original albumen prints – most hand-colored – of Japanese scenes by photographers Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1934) and Felice Beato (1832-1909). Kimbei worked as a colorist early in his career.
Subjects include geisha, sumo wrestlers, a staged harakiri scene, Kabuki actors with weapons, street acrobats, vendors; pilgrims; “Palanquin on Snowing”; the morning prayer of a Buddhist priest; a funeral procession; a Shinto offering to a god; workers transplanting rice; workers in a tea plantation.
